My Honest Experience on a Disneyland VIP Tour: Is It Worth It?

When one of my Disney clients, who quickly became a good friend, invited my husband and me to join her family's Disneyland VIP Tour, I had to take her up on it!

Not only was it an incredibly generous invitation, but it also gave me the opportunity to experience one of Disneyland's most exclusive offerings firsthand. As a Disney travel advisor, I always want to experience as much as I can myself so I can better guide my clients. While I've spent plenty of time in the Disney Parks over the years, this was my first time experiencing a Disneyland VIP Tour—and after spending the day with a VIP Guide, I completely understand why so many families choose this experience.

My client, who is a Walt Disney World season pass holder, was visiting Disneyland with her two teenagers for their very first trip. She hadn't visited since she was a child herself and wanted their first park day to be as stress-free and magical as possible. Rather than spending months studying Lightning Lanes, mobile ordering strategies, and park touring plans, she decided to invest in a VIP Tour so they could simply enjoy the day together and prioritze their must-do list on their first park day.

After spending nearly nine hours with our guide, I walked away with a completely new appreciation for what a Disneyland VIP Tour really offers.

What Is a Disneyland VIP Tour?

A Disneyland VIP Tour is a private, fully customized guided experience led by one of Disney's highly trained VIP Tour Guides (often affectionately called "Plaids" because of their iconic plaid vests).

Each tour is designed specifically around your group's interests. Before your tour, you’ll be asked about your priorities, favorite attractions, dining preferences, mobility needs, and any special celebrations. Your guide then creates a personalized itinerary so you don't have to worry about planning every detail yourself.

A few important things to know:

  • Tours are booked for a minimum of 7 hours (ours ran from 9:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.).

  • Pricing is by guide—not per person—which means the cost is the same whether your group has one guest or 10 guest allowed.

  • Park tickets and park reservations are required separately.

  • Your guide escorts you throughout the parks, handles ride logistics, and provides expedited access to many attractions through Lightning Lane entrances or other designated entrances when appropriate.

  • Depending on availability, VIP Tours also include reserved viewing areas for select nighttime entertainment.

In short, it's the ultimate "leave the planning to someone else" Disney day.

Who Is a Disneyland VIP Tour Best For?

While I genuinely loved the experience, I don't think a VIP Tour is the right fit for every vacation—and that's okay.

I think it provides the most value for:

  • First-time Disneyland visitors who don't want the pressure of planning every detail.

  • Families with older kids and teenagers who want to ride as many attractions as possible.

  • Large families or multi-generational groups who can split the cost among several people.

  • Luxury travelers looking for a premium experience.

  • Guests celebrating milestone birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or other special occasions.

  • Visitors with only one day in the parks who want to maximize every minute.

  • Families traveling with mobility needs who appreciate having someone expertly navigate accessibility options.

If your perfect Disney day revolves around slowly exploring, eating snacks, people-watching, and soaking in the atmosphere, a VIP Tour may not provide as much value. But if your goal is to experience as much as possible with minimal stress, it's hard to beat.

Our VIP Tour group! My client and friend, Rebecca, with her kids, Joey and Adeline. My husband, Casey, me, and our VIP Tour Guide, Michael.

Our VIP Tour Experience

Our day began at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, where my client was staying.

Check-in couldn't have been easier. Our guide greeted us in the lobby with a warm smile and welcomed us with VIP Tour-branded lip balm, hand sanitizer, and lotion—a small touch, but one that immediately made the experience feel special.

From the very beginning, I was impressed by how much preparation had gone into the day. Before our tour, our guide had already gathered information about our group's priorities, favorite attractions, mobility needs, and overall goals. It was obvious that this wasn't a one-size-fits-all experience.

Our guide was professional, calm, incredibly knowledgeable, and always seemed to know exactly where we needed to be next without making the day feel rushed.

One thing I especially appreciated was how accommodating he was with the wheelchair in our group. Instead of us trying to figure out accessibility procedures at every attraction, he handled everything seamlessly. It allowed everyone to simply enjoy the day rather than worry about logistics.

A Day Filled with Attractions

We started our morning at Disney California Adventure.

Our first attraction was The Little Mermaid – Ariel's Undersea Adventure before making our way toward Pixar Pier for Pixar Pal-A-Round (yes...we did the swinging gondolas, and yes...they were terrifying!).

From there, we rode Incredicoaster before heading into Cars Land for Radiator Springs Racers.

Next came Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, one of my favorite attractions in the park.

One unexpected highlight was visiting the VIP Tour Oasis—a private area reserved exclusively for VIP Tour guests. It offered comfortable seating in the shade along with complimentary snacks and beverages (think sodas, lemonades, water, and Mickey ice cream sandwiches!). It was the perfect opportunity to relax for a few minutes before continuing our adventure!

We also had the chance to purchase exclusive VIP Tour merchandise that isn't generally available to other park guests.

Around lunchtime, we hopped over to Disneyland Park.

Shortly after entering, we picked up popcorn and stopped by a locker where our VIP Tour Mickey ears were waiting for us (so cute)!

Then it was time to start checking attractions off the list.

By the end of the day, we had experienced:

  • Space Mountain

  • Matterhorn Bobsleds

  • Storybook Land Canal Boats

  • Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

  • Peter Pan's Flight

  • Pinocchio's Daring Journey

  • Snow White's Enchanted Wish

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

  • Haunted Mansion

  • Pirates of the Caribbean

  • Indiana Jones Adventure

Along with everything we'd already experienced in California Adventure, we completed 16 attractions before our tour concluded.

Honestly, if someone had told me we'd accomplish that many rides during a busy summer day, I probably wouldn't have believed them.

Reserved Viewing for Nighttime Entertainment

Although our tour ended at 5:30 p.m., one of the perks continued into the evening.

Our guide arranged reserved viewing areas for Paint the Night, Fantasmic!, and the nighttime fireworks.

Knowing we already had fantastic viewing locations waiting for us eliminated another layer of planning and made the evening feel just as relaxed as the rest of the day.

Aside from that, the VIP viewing section itself was so luxurious! We had the best seats for all nighttime entertainment, and got to sit on benches with plenty of room, which was nice, too, when we wanted to leave our seats to get a churro or use the restroom—our seats were reserved! This was definitely one of the best perks of the VIP Tour experience!

What I Loved Most About the VIP Tour

The biggest benefit wasn't actually skipping lines.

It was the mental freedom.

I didn't have to refresh the Disneyland app.

I didn't have to watch wait times.

I didn't have to figure out Lightning Lanes.

I didn't have to map out our next attraction.

I didn't have to navigate accessibility procedures.

Someone else handled every detail!

That allowed all of us to simply enjoy being together.

As someone who loves planning Disney vacations, I never expected how refreshing it would feel to let someone else do the planning for a change.

Pros and Cons of a VIP Tour

Pros

  • Incredible time savings

  • Personalized itinerary

  • Minimal waiting for attractions

  • Expert guidance throughout the day

  • Wonderful for families with accessibility needs

  • Reserved viewing for select nighttime entertainment

  • Thoughtful surprises and premium service

  • Significantly reduces planning stress

Cons

The biggest downside is the price.

A Disneyland VIP Tour is a significant investment, and because of that, I don't think it's necessary for every vacation.

If your goal is to wander, snack, enjoy entertainment, and take things slowly, you may not get enough value from it.

However, if your goal is to accomplish as much as possible—especially with a larger group—the value becomes much easier to see.
